1997 Germany Photos
In 1997, during the last few days of July and the first 2 weeks of
August, I went to Germany. Ostensibly, I was there to attend the
Marktoberdorf Summer School in Computational Logic,
and that's why the Marshall
people helped pay some of my way. I did attend the school, and many
of the pictures are from there. However, since
airfare was paid for, I stayed in Germany an additional week after the
school ended and travelled around for a bit.
The rest of the pictures are from that part of
my trip. I've went back again a few months later to visit some friends, so those
photos are also here, but jumbled in witht the rest.
A fullish account of my first trip is
here.

The Bavarian Alps in the summer, taken during a day trip.
The town of Breitenberg seen from the Alps.
Me on the Nebelhorn above Oberstdorf.
I couldn't resist the sign on this schlock shop in Kaufbeuren, where Tanya and I had to change trains on the way to Oberstdorf.
It rained on the group excursion. But that didn't stop Thomas, Tanya, and Noemie from reaching the summit.
Somehow, there were two Thomas's from Denmarkat the school.
There where also two people from Turkey. Why is Ismail rolling his eyes at Meltem?
Me at the farewell dinner.
Jean-Yves Girard must have something really interesting to share with Henk Barendregt.
Henk warily overlooks a table of people. Is it because they weren't at his lectures?
Another table of people. All looking fairly content.
Noemie seems happy with plenty of empties in front of her.
Jose Meseguer, Henk, Sam Buss, Samson Abramsky, and Ursula Martin are enjoying dinner at least as much as they enjoyed lecturing.
Although a stern looking man, the Marktoberdorf house meister kept us well supplied with all sorts of beverages.
On the last night of the school, a few of us went out for ice-cream.
During the school, lecturer Stan Wainer captioned the football irregulars in a valiant effort against the world-renowned Marktoberdorf "Destroyers". Our Zermello Football Club lost, but the fans had fun. It might have been the free beer.
Frenzied ZFC supporters even made their own banner.
At several points, ZFC had the crowd on its feet.
A group shot of the entire summer school.
After a day climbing a wet mountain, we relaxed in the ski lodge with dinner.
We did do a bit of studying. Sometimes.
Bavarian night was a huge success. The kegs of beer helped immensely.
When I left the summer school, I went by train to Koln (Cologne).
There I stayed for three and a half days, seeing the sights and
meeting the natives. One of them was friendly, and she (Gesche)
invited me back to stay with her family for a few nights. So I spent
two nights in Wolfsburg, the home of Volkswagen. And not that much
else. But it was nice to live with a real family for a bit. I then
went back to Munchen (Munich), where I eventually found a hostel with
very friendly people. I also paid a visit to the Dachau concentration camp.
After two nights in Munich I caught the plane
back to Edinburgh. But as I wrote above, a more complete account is
here.
Gesche and I found this great playground in Cologne. So we climbed on it.
At the hostel in Munich I met Danielle and Martha who were part of our Hofbrauhouse group.
There where also two Brazilians at the hostel. They worked in television and carried cameras everywhere.
A nice thing about Bavaria is the beer. Served by the liter, on occasion. Here I am, with my three.
Some people handle alcohol better than others. Danielle steals cones. And later gets caught!
Our Hofbrauhouse group split up for a bit, and I wound up with this photos of us and some Italians.
Here's Gesche in her room in Koln.
And here she is in her high school picture.
On a much more somber note, I also went to the Dachau concentration camp. Litteraly a hell of a place, the beauty of some memorials stands in stark contrast to the bleakishly bright compound.
Although they wouldn't look out of place in a bakery, these ovens were used to burn the bodies of the dead. Some of the dead.
